Thomas Bailey, MD is a board-certified ophthalmologist specializing in comprehensive eye care including diabetic eye disease, macular degeneration, glaucoma, and retinal problems. He also performs post- cataract laser surgery.
Dr. Bailey graduated from Columbia College in NYC where he was Battalion Commander of his ROTC unit. After serving 4 years in the United States Navy, and reaching the rank of Lieutenant, Dr. Bailey attended Albany Medical College where he graduated Summa Cum Laude and Alpha Omega Alpha in 1971.
Dr. Bailey trained under Dr. Robert Reinecke in ophthalmology at Albany Medical Center. He has done more than 9000 cataract surgeries, and he performed the first intra-ocular lens implant at the Albany VA Hospital, and the first YAG Laser in Albany to correct hazy vision after a lens implant.
Through the years, Dr. Bailey has trained many ophthalmology residents at the Albany VA Hospital and the Albany Medical Center. He has held several academic appointments at those hospitals along with The Childs Hospital, now the Albany Medical Center South Clinical Campus where he is currently an attending physician. He was formerly Chief of the Ophthalmology Department and Chairman of the Medical Staff there.
A native of White Plains, NY, Dr. Bailey has been in private practice since 1974. He is a partner and associate with Aida S. Wakil , MD at Bailey & Wakil Eye Physicians & Surgeons in Albany and Greenville, NY. He is married to Maxine Lynn Bailey. They have three children and six grandchildren.
Dr. Bailey is certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology, a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, and a Life Fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology.

Dr. Aida Wakil is a board-certified ophthalmologist who is fellowship trained in Cornea and Refractive surgery. Dr. Wakil specializes in advanced laser cataract surgery and LASIK/refractive procedures. She is a fellow of the American Board of Ophthalmology and the American College of Surgeons. Dr. Wakil practices comprehensive eye care including cataracts, diabetic eye care, glaucoma, macular degeneration and cornea diseases. She attended college at Duke University including a semester in Paris, France. She graduated from Howard University College of Medicine in Washington, D.C. summa cum laude and completed her ophthalmology residency at University of Illinois at Chicago.
Her fellowship in advanced Cornea surgery and disease management and Refractive Surgery was completed at St. Louis University in Missouri. She has worked at the NIH (National Institutes of Health) where she performed research as part of the National Eye Institute. She has been in private practice since 1995 and practicing in the Albany and Vermont area. In 2005 Dr. Wakil joined Dr. Bailey and has continued to perform outstanding, caring and advanced medical and surgical treatments to our patients.
Dr. David E. Auringer is a Board-Certified Ophthalmologist specializing in comprehensive ophthalmology including: Cataract surgery, macular degeneration, glaucoma, diabetic eye disease and retinal problems. Dr. Auringer performs intraocular injections for the treatment of macular degeneration, diabetic eye disease, and vascular occlusions. He also specializes in laser eye treatments, including glaucoma laser surgery and secondary cataract laser.
Dr. Auringer has lived in the Capital Region for over 15 years. He graduated Magna Cum Laude from Siena College, Cum Laude from Albany Medical College, and completed his Ophthalmology training at Albany Medical Center. He received the Dr. Robert D. Reinecke Award for Research in Ophthalmology and was elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society.
After completing his training, he practiced at Bassett Healthcare in Cooperstown, NY, where he worked as a Senior Attending Ophthalmologist. During this time, he trained Columbia University medical students and residents.
Dr. Auringer is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, and the New York State Ophthalmological Society.
